Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please practice over the summer on the word list below. This will help your child to be prepared for the first grade. First graders will begin the school year reading in their reading books. It is very important that your child practice and be refreshed on the following skills:
*letter s of the alphabet (out loud)
*sounds of letters
*forming letters and numbers correctly
*sight words
*color words
*number words to 10
*writing numbers to 100

Studies have consistently shown that children who read at home are better readers in school. When a child and parents share a book together, that time together is special for the child. It is a time for having all of the parents' attention, a time for sharing an enjoyabe experience, a time of feeling warm, secure, comfortable, and cared for. These feelings become associated with books and reading. Children who have been read to at home are eager to become readers themselves.
During the summer, please make time to read with your child. While reading with your child, look over the pictures and talk about them. Pictures provide clues to words. Read the book to your child. Let your child attempt to read it back to you, or you may want to read the book out loud together. We are looking forward to working with your child.
