Beginning with the 2007-2008 school year Etowah City School will implement a new procedure for students' safety. The procedure is as follows:

If your child is to leave school in anyway that is different from their usual means, the teacher must be notified in writing by a parent or guardian (signed and dated). Phone calls to make a change will not be accepted! This includes any changes in buses, someone different picking up the child, and going home with someone after school. This is for your child's safety and protection.

Attendance

Regular attendance is a most important factor in the establishment of a good scholastic record. Work missed through absences or tardiness is difficult to make up. There is no substitute for the actual participation in the daily classroom instruction.
A student will be allowed six (6) parent or guardian passes for the year. A parent pass will be excused. After the six (6) parent passes are used up, the only excused absences are sickness of the student, serious illness, or death of a family member, religious holidays or impassable roads which is determined by the administration.
Vacations should be scheduled when school is out. Vacations during school are not acceptable! If a vacation must occur during school, the six (6) parent passes would have to be used.
Excused absences grant the student permission to make-up all work without penalty. An unexcused absence does not allow the student to make-up work.

Tardy Policy

If your child arrives after 7:45 A.M. they are tardy and must report to the office for an admit slip. They must also bring a written excuse, doctor/dental excuse, or a parent/guardian needs to come to the office with them to explain the reason for the tardy. If your child arrives in the classroom after 7:45 A.M.  their teacher will send them to the office for a tardy slip.  It is important that they arrive to class on time.

FAQ's on Tardy

What makes a student tardy?
**Any student who arrives at school after 7:45 A.M. are reported as tardy

What constitutes an excused tardy?
**The following are examples of valid excuses, but are not all inclusive:
Doctor/Dental excuses from the doctor/dental office.
Transportation related issues - flat tire, dead battery, car accident, etc... (This should not be a daily excuse.)
Family crisis/issue - considered on a case by case basis.
Sickness - of the student with a note or parent/guardian coming in to the office
.

What constitutes an unexcused tardy?
**The following are examples of unexcused reasons, but are not all inclusive.
    Over sleeping
    Missing the bus
During a bus suspension having transportation problems.
Not having a note or a valid excuse

Board policy states that students with 5 days unexcused tardy will have the same consequence as an unexcused absence.

What is the Tardy Detention  Policy of Etowah City School?

If your child receives an unexcused tardy they will be required to stay the following day in detention. Tardy detention for Kindergarten and 1st grade will from 2:30 to 3:00 P.M., and for grades 2nd-8th 3:00 to 3:30 P.M. Parents/Guardians will be required to come to the office to sign out the student.

Why was "Tardy Detention" implemented?

  • To curtail unnecessary tardiness.
  • To lessen the disruption of classes --- when tardy students enter the classroom, teachers to have to go over the same materials again and again thus delaying the learning process.
  • To encourage parents/students to make school a priority by being on time.
  • When a student begins their school day on time they most often are better prepared for the rest of the day.

  Disciplinary Procedures

Detention

Detention will be held from 3:00P.M.- 4:00 P.M. and must be served by the student the day after it is earned. A copy of the discipline paper, with the reason for the detention and the date to be served will be given to the student. Parents are responsible for picking their child up by 4:00 P.M.  that day at the Parent Pick-Up area. If the day of the detention needs to be changed a parent must call the principal by 10:00 A.M. Detentions will not be changed without a parent phone call or note to the school.

Consequences for failure to serve a detention:

  • 1st missed detention = 2 detentions
  • 2nd missed detention = 3 detentions, parent phone call or conference
  • 3rd missed detention = This will result in an in/out of school suspension

Behaviors that result in detentions:

  • Failure to follow classroom rules
  • Inappropriate behavior
  • Incomplete homework
  • Minor class disruptions
  • Cheating/Lying
  • Minor Disrespect
  • Possession of cell phone (Cell phones will be confiscated and only returned to a parent.)
  • Dress Code violation
  • Inappropriate lunchroom behavior
  • Total of 5 unexcused tardies or early dismissals in a 6 week period

In-School and Out-of School Suspensions

In and out of school suspensions are the result of more serious actions. The following behaviors result in either an in or out of school suspension:

  • Chronic offenses resulting in 3 or more detentions (administrators' discretion)
  • Fighting
  • Threatening physical harm
  • Bullying/Harassment
  • Theft, possession or destruction of another's property
  • Defiance or disrespect (blatantly disrespectful, not following directions, obscene gestures, inappropriate language, etc...)

The behaviors mentioned above will result in the following disciplinary actions:

  • 1st offense =      1-3 days ISS, parent call or conference
  • 2nd offense =     3-5 days ISS, parent conference, possible referral to McMinn County Juvenile Services
  • 3rd offense =     1-5 days OSS, parent conference, possible referral to McMinn County Juvenile Services
  • 4th offense =     Up to 10 Days OSS, parent conference, possible referral to McMinn County Juvenile Services and Discipline Hearing

The following will result in the loss of participation or attendance of extracurricular activities, including ball games, dances, class trips, sports, etc...

  • Currently serving (ISS), In-School Suspension or (OSS) Out of School Suspension
  • Served in ISS 3 or more days per semester
  • Served any OSS during the semester
  • Accumulated 4 or more detentions per semester
  • Accumulated 3 or more unexcused absences per semester
